I know a married couple who online an hour apart. No plans to ever move in together, they visit each other on the weekends and are completely happy with the arrangement. I'm an extreme introvert so it sounded great to me, maybe minus all the traveling. But in this economy, it's definitely not practical.

I appreciate this perspective, and I agree it would be unfair to retract the offer. I feel it was more of a communication issue that we couldn’t discuss it before he offered it to the employees right away, he was thinking about what would benefit them and not what I might want.
You might just need to ask him his status and make your interest more clearly explicit.
