I feel there is a difference between being informed and falling prey to the outrage machine, and it’s important to recognise when you are spending your time and energy on the wrong kind of news.
Unless I have a personal connection, I have no interest in personal tragedies, whether that is one person or a dozen. A person got murdered, a bus came off the road, the details of a school shooting: I cannot fix this. I am sad and sorry, but I do not need to know.
What I do need to know are systemic issues. My government passing laws that make the country worse. Voters being disenfranchised, companies allowed to pollute without limitations, laws that allow (or even encourage!) violence against minorities etc.
I also cannot keep track of and protest and lend my energy to every cause, so while I want to reman broadly informed, I focus on a limited range of issues.
I try to keep my fury burning at a sustainable rate. It is easy to burn out or feel overwhelmed; it is easy to be apathetic. What I aim for is enough anger to keep fighting the good fight without letting it take over my life or drain me completely.
