It seems I was a bit mistaken in my initial understanding, and you did have communication and a shared understanding with James at least (who is the most important person, so I'm glad) – but I wonder what is it that caused the sudden change in his attitude. It's very strange for him to go from sharing your view and being supportive to so different so suddenly.
I wonder if his family may have put some pressure on him in his vulnerable state, or if the weight of the loss somehow hit him differently causing some kind of an emotional shutdown?
The way you've explained it in the comments (and to James), it sounds like a touching private gesture, but I suppose people under the mistaken impression (like me, initially) would have thought differently. However due to how hectic and distraught everything must have been, I hope you don't blame yourself for anything, I'm sure you communicated as best you could through your grief, which is enough. I was just trying to suggest how others might have seen things, to try to figure out a motive in a way.
I'm sorry the misunderstanding escalated to a dreadful conflict like this. I hope you can reach the accord you had before with James and process just what happened – it's very hard for both of you to have to maneuver such a big supposedly joyous, high expectation, extended family milestone event so soon after such a horrible loss, with rushed and lacking emotional support to process.
However like I said I do think it was better for you to call a time out rather than let your wedding become a horrible memory. I hope that perhaps you (and James) can find, after long conversations, the time to plant that bush. And again I'm terribly sorry for your loss.
I get that. I was kind of a dick about it ( pun intended). But I really think he needs.to downplay it. And like I said…if she wants to use the sleeve each and every time…well, now he has a legitimate reason to raise the issue. Otherwise, if he says anything right now, she could easily play innocent and say she just wanted to get something fun/ spice it up/etc. Kniw what i mean?
