I loved my father dearly, but he was a bipolar schizophrenic. His mental state was a constant source of stress and fear, especially for my mother. I didn’t realize how bad it was when I was younger, but then once I was old enough to see, it was pretty tough. He had a delusion that he was Jesus. To prove he was in fact Jesus, he caused significant self harm and was pretty close to dying. But he survived and it only fueled the delusion. He died a few years ago from cancer, but he was always in so much mental anguish that it was a relief. He could finally rest.
After seeing what my family went through, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to not stay.
