At the end of the day the real red flag is that his friends thought it was distressing enough to tell you, they betrayed their good friend to tell you, they obviously feel very very uncomfortable about it, enough to tell you, you probably don't have the full picture of the creepiness like his friends do, if he was genuinely a good person like you hope, with genuine intentions, his friends would not have felt so strongly to tell you and betray him.

I agree, though it is certainly an unpopular opinion. Just like most aspects of someone else's relationship is none of my business, why throw myself in the middle of 2 people I hardly know?
