  1. Story time:

My parents split before I turned 1. My mom was a single parent supporting my 2 older sisters and I. We were 90s latchkey kids because my mom had to work all the time. I was raised by the internet. Despite being an asshole, a narcissist, a cheater, etc, my dad paid child support without a court order.

Nevertheless, I have vivid memories of mom crying about money several times throughout my childhood. One time, I broke open my piggy bank, sorted out all the pennies, and presented her all the coins I had to give. She yelled at me for it, I barely remember why, but it left a mental scar.

Meanwhile, my dad became a very wealthy CEO and would take us kids to visit him and his new wife for two to four weeks every summer in London or wherever else. Usually on a cruise so he didn't have to actually watch us.

Mom worked herself to the bone to give us a good childhood and never remarried. It ended up being a weird dichotomy between lower middle class life 95% of the time, with brief views into the upper class lifestyle. My mom died a few months back. She worked until age 65 and died at 69. Mom always told us dad was a good man who was just different, and he loved us in his own way. (Bravo to her for not bashing him to us, imo.) But, yeah, I don't really like my dad much, I do my best to not be like him and we don't talk much.

He's worth many, many millions, but we buy our own coach plane tickets to bring the grandkids down to Florida to see him when we do visit.

Would my life have been better if my mom and dad had stayed together? I don't know, but I know it would for sure have turned out radically different.
