By any chance, are you familiar with HFA, High Functioning Autism? It's basically the only thing that I can think of to explain his behavior. It would fit perfectly, and it's not at all unusual for someone to get into their 20s without being diagnosed.
I'm sure as hell not qualified or able to make a diagnosis based on a Reddit post, but it might be worth looking into. Like I said, it would completely explain all of the weird behavior that you've described.
