People of Reddit are usually very split when giving advice. Looking through all of these comments, every single person is telling you the same exact thing. That this is a HUGE deal and he is acting like a jerk. That, in itself, should be a big wake up call on how horrible this situation is for you…
If he doesn’t plan to keep the money, why is it unethical
He could use the money made from the sale to buy the bike he actually wants and donate the rest to a cause that supports climate action
It would still be within the spirit of the company’s intent for the funds and he’d get the bike he wants, which is also still part of the climate mission
But if he’s really that uncomfortable with that sort of plan, why not just get the $400 bike and just not worry about “maximizing” the available funds?
It doesn’t make sense to get the more expensive bike just because the funds are there when the one he actually wants is the cheaper one ?
