Not at all. It’s like this girl I used to work with who changed her hair one day. I said “hey I really like your hair!” and her angry response was “what was wrong with it before?”
Sometimes people just look for a negative angle on something nice. They try to find the dark part of a compliment or joke, or even a gift. I have learned that the best way to get away from that behavior is to give it a hot stop and say “hey I was just trying to be nice, but if this is how it’s going to be then fuck you” or something to that effect. Since this is a girlfriend I would probably change the ending to soften it though.
