Just to play devil’s advocate, it’s possible she told him in the hopes that he would express zero interest/a passionate love for his wife and kill any imaginations in her mind of a potential romance. I know somebody who did that (and the resulting embarrassment for everybody caused a shake-up at work, so it was a terrible idea. Still, it happens.)
