It's funny you say that because I told him this past year has felt like emotional abuse looking back on it. Eh, i wouldn't say that Yoruichi is Explicitly Japanese in the Bleach Universe (or what the Shinigami equivalent to being Japanese/Asian is). Especially when you have characters like Nimaiya who are drawn pretty explicitly to be “Black” (Anime/Mangaka are hardly creative when it comes to ethnic people) but have very Japanese Names. Even Sado is half Mexican in canon. So he has some consistency in showing “Brown coded” characters as being explicitly brown skinned. Also when you consider that a lot of the Quincies seem to be “German/European” with a lot of “non-japanese” names it gets kind of weird.
I mean i think its safe to assume that default race in any anime is Japanese (or equivalent) until stated otherwise. but in this particular case with this artist, it is a possibility that Yoruichi might not have been intended to be “fully” japanese (equivalent). Of course, we will never really know unless Tite Kubo himself comes out and says “She's Black”
