I’m severely allergic to cats too, I have four cats and I love them. I was on multiple different antihistamines and steroids to treat the symptoms -Ryaltris (olopatadine / mometasone) was the best out of all the different allergy medications I have used.
The cost of allergy drugs, is more long term than the cost of allergy shots. I started allergy shots in September last year and they have just started working, and I have to get them monthly for at least 3 years. Allergy shots take time, to start being effective, but already I have cut back massively on medications after 5 months of shots and am feeling so much better and my doctor thinks it will only continue to improve.
