Any chance he got the idea that you've become bored with him? It's possible that he suspects that you at least occasionally TELL him you're busy when in fact you'd just rather avoid him. Could be a poorly-designed effort to be less boring, more fun to be with.

My parents got engaged after knowing each order for two years. It worked out for them but my mom has always told me to wait much longer. She said even if you know there are things you just don’t have time to learn in that time, you need a good deal longer to have those naked conversations about future decisions.
