Notice OP didn’t express sadness that the wife might have developed a crush on someone else. He was ANGRY because he works with all these females and did not get close to someone and develop a work crush. As if he missed out on something for HER and she did not do the same.
Wife did not want the separation. She made career altering decisions to put distance between herself and the coworker. Even though OP said THEY need the separation so wife can see if she and crush can work out, I think he is the one who needs the separation so he can be free to test out the waters with the other female auditors during busy season.

That's gonna be tough for strangers to help you with as we don't know you or your gf. Me, when I was younger, I did use the “break” at least once to end a relationship… but thats me, not her.
