Did mom do drugs or alcohol while pregnant? There are serious developmental issues that show up later in life and as her father, you will need to be there for all these issues. Has mother completely relinquished custody of the child? Was the child taken away ? Are there chances of mom getting the child back if she cleans up, or gets her crap together? These are very important issues that must be cleared up. You could spend 8 years with your daughter only to have mom suddenly show up and take your daughter from your life if there is any loophole open.
Having children is a massive responsibility; emotionally, financially and physically. Get all your facts and info before making a decision.

I get that. There's a principle at stake here and you want your bf to stand by you because, let's face it, that just plain shows that he cares. But if I were you, I would wait to make a stand on an issue that really matters to you. The fact that you don't really want to go undermines you position badly.
What would happen if you won this fight? Your boyfriend would stay behind with you but then he might resent you for preventing him from going on a trip that he wants to go on and you don't. And if you actually got to go on the trip, everybody would quickly figure out that you don't actually want to be there, and you would get labeled a Karen.
