It's pretty feasible for anyone to do JET once they are able to support themselves. Which OPs wife should be doing. Many students study and work. The JET program accepts many people and you don't need to know a whiff of Japanese. The only requirement is a bachelors degree in any field. So perhaps OPs wife is overdoing it.

Yeah, it happened to me last year. In 5 or 6 dates she gave me no signs to escalate and out of the blue she invited me to her place for dinner and a movie. It was short notice like come over ASAP. It seemed to me her plans at the last minute as dinner was ready when I got there (20-30 minutes) I did go over and eat and we watched a movie. It was dinner time anyway. But I wasn't going to be the plan B man, so I kept a respectful distance. After the movie I left. I told her I had fun but we're not on the same page and didn't wish to continue dating her.
