I can understand why you miss her and don't want her to be all alone again because you fear what's going on with her now, after she messed up all the good you two had.
But keep in mind – domestic abuse is a very serious red line you talked about. Her not caring about that in the moment and hitting you in the face is not a small issue that can be easily resolved. If that's what it's like so short into being with each other, don't imagine what would happen if you stayed a few years. So cutting all contact like you did seems pretty reasonable.

Your boyfriend is being far more patient then most American men(myself included) would be. Spitting in his face was crossing a line that is beyond “cultural sensitivity”. For comparison, the last and only time someone spit in my face resulted in serious physical violence.
Let’s flip the script: what if his parents hated people from Nigeria/Africa, refused talk to you, etc? Spit on you as they did him, or even just verbally assaulted you and your culture.
