If she starts pushing back against your plans you can kindly say, “I know this is a different dynamic because I’m not a child anymore. Can you explain why you feel this way? I value your input but I need to make my own decisions. I hope you’ll support me.” (Or something to that effect)
Relationships forged through mutual trauma are always short-lived. But you're not going to get over this until you stop making attempts to contact her. This was probably a mistake, or maybe it helped you both get through your grieving. But it's over now and continuing to try to talk to her, meet with her, etc. is only dragging it out and making it more painful.
Girl, you’ve got to cut out the gentle chats. He needs to know, and he can help you both figure it out by keeping a journal of what he eats or wears or whatever to see if you can find a pattern.
Stop worrying so much about hurting his feelings. Be loving and forthright. It’s much kinder than continuing to be “nice” about it and not come right out.
Because to this child he is a stranger. It’s less traumatic for the child to be with people she loves and knows.
