We used to have a male friend, who came by ours once looking for sympathy as he wasn’t sure about becoming a father and that maybe he could get out of it somehow. His poor girlfriend who he’d been with for 10 years was 6 months pregnant with a much wanted IVF baby at this point. They had been doing IVF for 5 YEARS!! Maybe your BIL has given your husband sympathy and an echo chamber instead of the the bollocking he deserved. I would be blocking BIL for a start!
Think what you want now, and do what’s best for you. In all honesty I think this would be a deal breaker for me. I don’t think I could ever look at him the same again, even if he did back down. I would always think his foot was out the door. You don’t deserve this disrespectful behaviour.
Just take 100% responsibility for your actions. Tell him it was entirely your fault, and don‘t turn things on him when he gets angry (which is what a lot of cheaters do).
If he breaks up with you, you cannot change his decision.
Maybe advice for the future: Get tested and stay away from alcohol for a little while.
