To me, it would seem that if he has been made uncomfortable by the situation posed to him that it would be best to accept his wishes. If his concerns are that this new marriage will put the happy life you both have built with your son at risk, be it through religious consequence or through the emotion strain this will cause him, then that should be enough reason not to go through with it.
