It sounds as if the cost/benefit on this relationship is starting to be more cost than benefit. I will say; I kind of feel as if we're not getting the full picture from your post, but just based on what you said it was pretty shitty of her to make that comment right after what sounds like a nice afternoon you spent with her and her kids. If she tends to be negative and hard-to-please in general she's likely not a good partner.
This reasoning was that the couples first Christmas is always gifts for the house (I wasn't informed of this) and that I had once briefly mentioned that we need a frying pan and a blender would be nice.
