In these situations there's usually a hidden reason behind the weird overreaction. In this case I think he was looking for an excuse to break up. The “disrespect” then becomes something he hopes friends and family will consider a somewhat acceptable reason. Why he'd want to break up is still a mystery, but you don't say much about the relationship itself so I'm not going to speculate.
