He's flat out rude and selfish. This has nothing to do with fatphobic. He's making a very lame excuse. It sounds like his mother greatly contributed to this behavior. If someone i was dating pulled this around me i would be mortified, especially if it was after i explained why it was rude, and i would end the relationship immediately.
