The fact of the matter is he didn’t care enough to put any effort in. If he cared enough he would find or make time to learn at least some of the basic greetings and phrases if he was serious about you. If he saw your mother as a true mother in law then he would be putting in effort to try and speak with her knowing that she can’t speak English. Honestly I would take a hot look at the man you’re engaged to, and I would wonder if he would try to insist any children you have only speak English…
