It’s not clear though exactly why she was upset. I haven’t met a many people who were inherently just controlling. Most were bad communicators who were trying (poorly) to manage some other issue through control.
Most people work M-F, just try to get through the week and have 2 days of personal time. If OP was giving Saturday to the guys while she gets the scraps of the weekend because “I see you every day”, it’s not unreasonable for her to be upset. How often did OP put effort into date nights vs friend time? Was there a pile of dirty dishes and chores to be done OP bailed on to see his friends, that now had to be done alone or during a time they could have actually had quality time?
Did wife actually have any friends to hang out with? Because saying “you can go out with your friends tomorrow” isn’t offering anything if she has no available friends. Mid 20s is the first wave of marriage, kids, moving away for jobs and lots of friendships evaporate. OP does admit she was lonely during those years.
Then the kids came and OP still got to see his friends weekly, although with a cold shoulder and a curfew. Frankly that’s pretty damn permissive for 3 kids under 5.
I’m not saying wife handled things correctly then or now, but I suspect the root of this issue is deeper than trying to isolate him from his friends.

He can't exactly keep you from traveling. If you want to, go for it. And probably reconsider being with him if he can't handle you wanting to go on a trip.
He is bisexual, so that's not my concern. My concern is whether or not he's been trying to hook up with people behind my back.
