Thats the issue.

I think that if you're at the point where you're considering going through their phone, the relationship is already one I wouldn't want to live in, no matter what you find. So why bother? Just break up at that point.
Going through their phone that one time won't fix the fundamental problem of trust. They may have a secret second phone. They may be using the browser on their computer for whatever. Going through their phone won't make you feel safe, because if they'd lie to you they might also do an actually good job at covering their tracks. So you can never be sure.
You can use the “contacts except” feature aswell, so you can see the live! status of who you need but not that of whoever you don't want on that list and they can't see yours
