That doesn't excuse what he did. This is how he reacts to a very mild embarrassing situation? He could A) feel mild embarrassment for a brief moment or B) verbally thrash the crap out of his girlfriend, make it all her fault, watch her get emotionally distressed about the way he is treating her and still continue to emotionally abuse her and then follow that up with refusing to speak to her.
Apologizing just doesn't cut it. He saved himself from feeling mildly uncomfortable feelings by making you feel horrible. He saved himself at your expense. He is not healthy, happy relationship material. If you don't break up with him this time, at least promise yourself that you will break up with him the next time.
