It's true that there is something of a line that's crossed – where there is an admittedly noxious odor, but not as bad the horrific visuals evoked by your description.

I mean, it's like the question “where are you from?”. Some people take that as a major insult and racist behavior, like “I am Swedish, what do you mean?” – but hey, I want to know things about you. Yes, your general appearance might indicate to me that no, you are not of swedish-finnish heritage, so my curiosity tells me “untangle this”. I am not trying to build a heritage tree to see if you are lawfully allowed to marry pure-aryan peoples.
So, he's perhaps just used to some other accent, other pronunciations etc than what you are using, so try to broach a better way to talk about it?
And when it comes to language, there is very seldom a single “right” way to do stuff. I mean, english is a bastard of a language (read the book The Adventure of English, fantastic stuff) with influences from everywhere and living its own life in two different nations – and one of those nations, the US, has 50 different states and 340 million people, that language is evolving super fast and in weird ways.
Not to mention all other countries that have english as their official languages. There are more ways to speak english then there are folks to do it. No, that makes no sense.
Anyway, a difference is, I think, that in the different chinese languages, mandarin I think, pronunciation is more specific and exact, due to the nature of the language, so he might very well think it is that important in english as well.
