IMO, you need to look out for you first. Subtle might not get you where you want to go, and while it might hurt her feelings, you do need to get some things across. Being straight-up with people is usually the best way to go, even if feelings get hurt. I've been on the receiving end of this, and yeah, it hurts in the moment, but when those feelings subside I have a better understanding of the relationship.
