Of course you are correct in finding that behavior unacceptable. Most self respecting adults would take issue with their partner doubt that same thing. However, you need tell him why you are done with him. Don't feel bad about investigating him. Privacy is for honest people, not cheaters and he gave you enough weird behavior to set off your suspicions and need for looking further.

He clearly gives value to the ring and he is planning to buy an expensive one, but if he knew you he would know that you don’t care about the ring itself but about the life-long commitment. You should know that the cheap ring he bought means that to him. He needs to know that having an expensive ring will give you stress due to fear of losing or breaking it.
My partner and I got 20$ engraved tungsten rings for our wedding. Tungsten won’t rust or tarnish, it wont get scratches easily, it’s cheap if we were to lose one of them we can easily order a new one with the same engraving.
